Let H be a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space. There is an open question: Can any quasidiagonal operator on H be a norm limit of finitely normal oprators? A finitely normal operator is quasidiagonal. It is known that for weighted shifts quasidiagonality and being a norm limit of finitely normal operators are equivalent. Unfortunately, the author answers this question in the negative. There are still some related open problems in the area. He states the exact result (formally stronger than the answer above). The construction is based on random techniques.
