An algebraic curve in the projective plane is a polynomial curve (i.e. parametrized by polynomials) iff it has only one point at infinity, e.g. the parabola is a polynomial curve, the hyperbola is not. With elementary methods the author gives an algorithmic criterion for plane algebraic curves to have only one place at a given point of the projective plane.
