The author critically evaluates ideas that base spline interpolation on the notion of minimizing the ``energy integral'' \(\int [y'']^ 2\). He points out the possibility of cusps using this criterion. He also points out that the notion of ``fairness'' of a curve should be based on curvature considerations, and not on the above integral.
