    A sixth order nonlinear mathematical model for a barge towed by a tugboat is derived. By linearization about a nominal operating point, local stability is investigated. Then, these results are compared with the ones obtained by numerical simulation of the original nonlinear equations. Conclusions are drawn from these studies on the effects of skegs, towrope length and flexibility on the stability of motion of barges.
