The paper has a survey character. The author deals with a one-dimensional Euclidean space and investigates various types and degrees of symmetry of sets and functions. It is shown, e.g., that symmetry and its polar opposite, antisymmetry, from a measure-theoretic viewpoint and a descriptive-topological viewpoint are submitted to the same restriction. The paper contains discussions of more open problems and some historical notes are included.
