In the study of Cartan subalgebras of an alternative algebra, D. M. Foster introduced the notion of \({\mathfrak a}\)-nilpotency. In this paper we show that under certain conditions \({\mathfrak a}\)-nilpotency implies nilpotency. This fact should be seen in connexion with a conjecture formulated by H. C. Myung about the nilpotency of power-associative algebras.
