[Part I, cf. Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 306, 791-804 (1988; Zbl 0662.20033).] Let SU(f) be the unitary group of an anisotropic hermitian form f. The main theorem of the work characterizes the representations \(\alpha\) : SU(f)\(\twoheadrightarrow SL_ n(R)\) over a commutative local ring R. The author remarks that this result can be used to classify the normal subgroups H of SU(f).
