By means of Galerkin-type methods in space and cosine time-stepping schemes, initial and boundary value problems for a class of semilinear hyperbolic wave equations with a nonlinear term on the right-hand side are discretized. Theoretical results on the convergence and optimal error estimates of fourth and second order temporal accuracy in \(L^ 2\) space are proved.
