It is shown that two-dimensional least-squares modeling and planar least- squares inverse (PLSI) stabilization problems can be treated in a unified manner. A recursive Cholesky factorization algorithm is developed. A set of sufficient conditions ensuring stability of the model or of the PLSI are presented. The considerations are illustrated by two numerical examples.
