The paper presents a new combinatorial approach to the 2-variable (homfly) polynomial of links. The evaluation of the polynomial of a given diagram is obtained from its values on its subdiagrams using a ``product operation'' for these polynomials. Jones' sequence of state models is derived from this product operation. Special results are obtained for closed braids where a state model for the Alexander-Conway polynomial is given which can be interpreted as an ice-type model. The Morton-Franks- Williams inequalities for braid-diagrams are reproved.
