A numerical differentiation procedure is proposed based on discrete mollification. Numerical stability is proved and error analysis of the numerical procedure is presented. An example is considered of a function identification problem in transient heat conduction. According to the reviewer's opinion it would be interesting to implement also an error analysis of the numerical scheme in a floating point computing environment.
