The author considers positive definite even unimodular lattices of dimension 40 which have no vector of norm (i.e., squared length) 2. The first theorem says that such a lattice is generated by its vectors of norms 4 and 6. The second part of the paper deals with lattices in which a maximal system of norm 4 vectors with even scalar products is of type \(D_{40}\).
