Theorems are derived concerning the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian structure of some averaged difference equations. The problem of reducing a set of equations for slow modulations to diagonal form is studied. The explicit form is given of the averaged Poisson brackets when one averages over the elliptic solutions of Volterra and Toda lattices.
