This is a printed version of a paper of late Eric van Douwen. The paper itself has been around for about fifteen years. It had sparked and influenced throughout an intensive research on many topics. The author is mainly concerned with the existence of some points in the remainders of the Čech-Stone compactification of N-like spaces. Those points include remote points, \(P_{\kappa}\)-points, \(\kappa\)-points. His constructions use often P(\({\mathfrak c})\) (or MA(\(\sigma\)-centred) as is known nowadays) for N-like spaces with countable \(\pi\)-weight, and CH for separable N-like spaces. Some results, especially those concerning remote points, have been reproven later in ZFC alone. More detailed account is given in notes by the editor.
