The following system is discussed: \[ \partial /\partial x_ i(a_{ij}(x)\partial u/\partial x_ j)-c(x)u=f,\quad x\in D,\quad D\subset {\mathbb{R}}^ 2. \] The system is elliptic and is to be solved under mixed boundary conditions in a bounded regular domain. The author gives uniqueness and existence conditions. The behaviour of the solution in the neighbourhood of points of maximal curvature of the boundary is also studied. The theoretical results are then used for the deriving of adapted numerical methods.
