The author extends some results due to Hofer concerning the existence of multiple critical points of a \(C^ 2\) functional defined on an ordered Hilbert space. As an application one gives an estimate for the number of solutions to the following problem studied by Angenent, Mallet-Paret and Peletier: \[ \epsilon^ 2u''(t)+u(1-u)(u-a(t))=0,\quad u'(0)=u'(1)=0. \]
