The authors present a stable FEM-FDTD hybrid method in 2D that allows for both electric and magnetic losses. The homogeneous space is discretized by a structured grid of rectangles, and the remaining regions in the vicinity of curved boundaries are discretized by an unstructured mesh of triangles. An unconditionally stable implicit time-stepping scheme is used for the FEM region. The method is tested on three scattering problems, e.g., the scattering from an airfoil with absorbing material on its leading edge.
