The authors are well-known researchers in the field of tribology, nanomechanics, friction, adhesion, and stochastic models for continuum mechanics. In the present book they study and compare phenomena related to random and fractal surfaces, the mechanisms of dry friction and adhesion, wetting and phase transition, flows of thermal liquids along rough surfaces, and biological and biomimetic surfaces. A hierarchical organization is pointed out, which may lead to understanding of common aspects of the above phenomena. The book contains 14 chapters. Rough surface topography and dry friction are studied in the first three chapters. Nonlinearity and hierarchy in friction problems are examined in chapter 4. The solid-liquid friction is studied in the second part, together with the stability of composite interfaces. Biological and biomimetic surfaces are topics of the third part. A very interesting outlok is given in the last chapter.
