The authors generalize the notion of Cayley transform in the symplectic group so that it allows them to construct a sequence of integer-valued invariants associated with a degeneracy instant of a smooth path of symplectomorphisms. As an application, in the real analytic case a formula for the Conley-Zehnder index is found in terms of those invariants.
