The iterative method of \textit{K. Ojiro, H. Niki}, and \textit{M. Usui} [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 150, No.~2, 293--302 (2003; Zbl 1022.65048)] to check whether a matrix is a \(H\)-matrix has been improved by \textit{H.-B. Li} and \textit{T.-Z. Huang} [Appl. Math. Lett. 19, No. 10, 1134--1142 (2006; Zbl 1125.65035)]. The former may not work for a reducible matrix. The outcome of the latter depends on the choice of some parameter \(\varepsilon\). These algorithms are the starting points of this paper to obtain a yet improved algorithm that does not need this parameter \(\varepsilon\) and that may converge in fewer iterations. A proof of the algorithm is included.
