The author examines the consequences of admissible gauge transformations for the formulation of configurational forces in defective and cracked electromagnetic bodies. Such transformations must leave both Maxwell equations and the balance of material momentum invariant. A further discussed question is the relevance of this invariance property to the phenomenological formulation of superconductivity in deformable solids where super current and material momentum seem to be intimately related.
