The authors consider an additional grading on the dual of the Steenrod algebra at an odd prime which seems closely related to the one used by \textit{H. Miller} in [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 84, 73--84 (1978; Zbl 0388.55013)]. Using it endows the (tri-graded) May spectral sequence with an additional grading which the authors are able to use to give an efficient way of detecting permanent cycles in the \(E_1\)-term of the May spectral sequence of low cohomological degree.
