In this paper the authors define and investigate a special class of tensor categories, which they call wide tensor categories. The motivation for the definition comes from the inverse braid monoid. Some special classes of wide tensor categories are defined and studied. The main result of the paper asserts that every strongly wide tensor category is wide tensor equivalent to a strict wide tensor category. At the end the authors discuss universality of the tensor category associated with the inverse braid monoid.
