Professor L. P.~Shil'nikov (born December 17, 1934) is known for his contributions to the theory of dynamical systems and nonlinear dynamics. In particular, he discovered the `Shil'nikov chaos' and proved a classical problem of Poincaré--Birkhoff on the orbit behaviour near a transverse homoclinic curve. The paper contains an essay on his scientific activities and in published on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
