The determination of the elementary divisors of the tensor product of two matrices is connected with the names Roth, Aitken, Marcus and Robinson, Brualdi, Norman, as well as the authors who studied tensor products of functional models in some detail [Linear Algebra Appl. 432, No. 2--3, 678--721 (2010; Zbl 1181.15032)]. In the present paper they focus mainly on the computation of the elementary divisors of the Sylvester and Lyapunov maps. The authors see the main advantage of the functional setting in that the computation of elementary divisors reduces to scalar polynomial modular arithmetic.
