The authors consider the problem of choosing between the Cox proportional hazard model and a stratified model for survival data. They propose to use the expectation of the log-likelihood as a theoretical criterion and the likelihood cross-validation criterion as its empirical approximation. The efficiency of the proposed approach is assessed via simulations. An application to epidemiologic data is considered.
