Gaussian mixed ANOVA models are considered with nested random effects and crossed fixed factors. For models with three variance components a class of central composite designs with sub-experiments is proposed. An iterated least squares method is developed for the calculation of maximum likelihood estimates of the variance components. Performance of the proposed procedure is assessed via simulations.
