The paper is concerned with an a posteriori error estimator for the finite element solution of a discontinuous Galerkin method with polynomials of fixed degree. The main term is based on gradient recovery by averaging. There are additional terms due to the nonconformity of the method. Another term measures the deviation of the recovered gradient from an equilibrated flow. Thus ideas from the hypercircle method are hidden here, and the upper bound holds with a constant one for the main term.
