The paper proves a conjecture about the relationship between Baxter permutations and pairs of alternating sign matrices that are produced from domino tilings of Aztec diamonds. The relationship is the following: a tiling corresponds to a pair of alternating sign matrices that are both permutation matrices iff the larger permutation matrix corresponds to a Baxter permutation. This seems to be the first link between pattern avoiding permutations and tilings of regions, two thriving areas in enumerative combinatorics.
