It is described how to perturb the matrices of a real \(n\times n\) quadratic symmetric eigenproblem so that some chosen eigenvalues are moved to prescribed positions. Real eigenvalues can be perturbed into complex pairs and vice versa and the eigenvectors may be changed. The perturbation is effected using a block diagonalization of an equivalent \(2n\times 2n\) linear eigenvalue problem. Optimality of the perturbation in terms of rank and norm is discussed. The results are illustrated on a small mechanical spring system.
