The author considers himself to be an `applied Platonist'. By this he means somebody who believes in `the relevance of the analysis, qualitative or quantitative, of the deviations of nature from a mathematical reality, and the predictive power of it.' The author does not believe, however, in the existence of `applied mathematicians', thereby stressing the specificity of mathematics as a field.
