Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be two CW-complexes. In this paper the author gives an interpretation of the Gray index, see [\textit{Lê Minh Hà}, Topology 44, No.~1, 217--229 (2005; Zbl 1064.55009)] of a phantom map between \(X\) and \(Y\), in terms of the rationalization of \(X\).
