Representing a 2-bridge knot (or link) K as a special braid in normal form as developed by the author [Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hamb. 54, 199- 224 (1984; Zbl 0557.57004)], a formula for the Alexander polynomial of K is obtained. As an application some results of Hartley and Murasugi are derived from this formula and some examples are discussed.
