This paper presents another effort by the author to extend his work and the work of his colleagues to understand and establish convergence theory for various approximations to the neutral particle transport equation. The objective of the current paper on the convergence of the multigroup approximation is to provide some insight into the capabilities and limitations of the method in the hope that such work would perhaps guide strategies for selecting multigroup structures which would optimize accuracy. In this paper, stability, convergence and consistency properties of the steady state multigroup model are investigated for subcritical slab media. The results in the particular Banach space setting chosen, extend to slab transport, results obtained by \textit{Nelson} [Ann. Nuclear Energy 7, 297-306 (1980)] in a shielding norm setting for multigroup transport in submultiplying rod media.
