Current development in the numerical treatment of ocean acoustic propagation (Q1091214)

Long range linear ocean acoustic propagation in an range-dependent environment is reviewed in the context of parabolic wave equation and its variant. A parade of different two-dimensional parabolic wave equations are reviewed in its applicability and limitation in the ocean acoustic propagation, particular attention is given to the angle of propagation, the wide angle parabolic wave equations. Numerical solution techniques are discussed. Review also covered the numerical solution of three-dimensional ocean acoustic problems. A discussion on a range of unsolved problems is given at the end. Important contribution developed for the ocean acoustic approximation and its numerical solution are reviewed. Among the important contributions discussed are: ''the improved parabolic equation'', the numerical treatment of ocean interface conditions'', ''the wide angle wave equation'', ''the numerical solution of three-dimensional ocean acoustic problem''.
