The paper shows in a rigorous mathematical form the applicability of the energetic approach for the treatment of nonlinear vibrations of elastic shallow shells. In particular the classical problem of dynamic snap- through under an instantaneously applied hydrostatic load is studied. Comparisons with numerical simulations show the efficiency of the energetic approach because very good agreement is found between the theoretical and the numerical results.
