A time-optimal control problem arising in forest stand management is presented. The paper refers to a nonlinear dynamic model, expressed in terms of diameter classes, of the growth of a Mediterranean forest stand. The problem is tackled by resorting to the Pontryagin maximum principle and is thus reduced to a two-point boundary value problem. The Hamiltonian being linear in the control, a singularity analysis is carried out which, taking into account the model structure, excludes the existence of singular extremals. A numerical example is finally presented.
