In this paper we characterize invariant subvarieties of torus embeddings which are local complete intersections in terms of geometry of convex polyhedral cones. \textit{M.-N. Ishida} [Tohôku Math. J., II. Ser. 32, 111-146 (1980; Zbl 0454.14021)] determined those which are Gorenstein. His result is used in our proof. It should be noted that the author [Tohôku Math. J., II. Ser. 38, 85-98 (1986; Zbl 0604.14044)] has already determined toric varieties themselves which are local complete intersections.
