In many classes a smooth interpolant is wanted for (possibly scattered) data in d-space. Then an interpolant is determined such that a functional is minimized which provides a measure of the smoothness. In this concept, e.g. the theory of thin plate splines has been developed. The flexibility of this known method is demonstrated in the paper.
