The author studies periodic subgroups of Chevalley groups over a field K having nontrivial intersections with all root subgroups and generated by these intersections. He proves that such a subgroup is conjugate by diagonal elements with the corresponding Chevalley group over a subfield of K. Similar results for nonperiodic subgroups and for periodic subgroups of Steinberg groups are proved under additional restrictions.
