The author discusses the use of quarternions in computer graphics. They are shown to be a well suited tool for solving rotation and orientation problems. Two methods for interpolating quarternions based on subdivision schemes for cardinal and tensioned B-splines are presented, which are suitable for the use within a keyframe animation system. Moreover, the use of quarternions in the field of modeling (propagation control graphs) and rendering (Phong shading) is shown.
