The author presents an extended version of the Emmy Noether lecture she gave at the meeting of the Association of Women in Mathematics in San Francisco, January 1981. In her article the author discusses various aspects of the Pythagorean equation \(a^2 + b^2 = c^2\). Among them are the composition of quadratic forms (in particular the binary case) and division algebras over the real number field. She also mentions possible generalizations and connected problems.
