The authors give a construction of a multiparameter quantum group which is a quasi-triangular ribbon Hopf algebra in the sense of \textit{N. Reshetikhin} and \textit{V. G. Turaev} [Invent. Math. 103, 547-597 (1991; Zbl 0725.57007)]. This algebra differs in several respects from the usual one-parameter version. In addition to giving the basic properties of this construction it is also related to invariants of links and to the so- called \(R\)-matrix satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation.
