The authors consider the governing equations of motion for a three- dimensional baroclinic atmosphere under semi-geostrophic approximation. Apart from the Rossby wave solutions, the authors show that a new solution exists in which the phase velocity is opposite to that of Rossby waves and there are only two types represented by solitary waves or cnoidal waves. Approximate relationships for the frequencies and amplitudes of these waves are given.
