The author determines various conditions in order to insure the well-posedness, for the future and the past, of the non-characteristic Cauchy problem. In particular, the operator is assumed to have all its characteristic roots real, multiple, and of constant multiplicity equal to 2. Under this assumption, conditions of Levi-type and of good decomposition are proposed, which can be necessary or sufficient for the well-posedness.
