Linear, continuous-time, stationary and finite-dimensional control systems are considered. The concepts of controllability degree, controllability margin and the amount of control are defined. Using the Kalman controllability matrix, several properties of dynamical control systems are investigated. Especially, certain measures of controllability are introduced and discussed in detail. Moreover, approximate decomposition into autonomous subsystems which are weakly or strongly connected with the outputs of the dynamical system is discussed. Numerical considerations are also presented. Similar quantitative analysis of the controllability problem for linear control systems can be found in the monograph [\textit{J. Klamka}, Controllability of dynamical systems. Dordrecht/Kluwer (1991; Zbl 0732.93008)].
