The author presents a numerical algorithm to compute the dimension and local structures of attracting sets or invariant manifolds of smooth dynamical systems. The author tested this algorithm for several examples, in particular for the Toda lattice, which is based on local adaptive Galerkin bases. An important feature of the algorithm presented in this paper is based on the fact that just ten degrees of freedom are found to be important, thus avoiding in this case, present machine limitations.
