A numerical algorithm using a two-stage and two-level difference scheme is developed for solving the heat transfer equation with nonlinear heat conductivity and bulk energy losses. At the first stage an intermediate value is calculated, and then it is used at the second stage for obtaining a corrected value. The scheme is consistent, second-order convergent in space, and almost second-order convergence in time. It is applied to the study of nonlinear stability and time evolution of thermal structures in optically thin plasma with solar abundances.
