An algorithm is described which computes the approximation order of spaces of periodic piecewise polynomial functions, given the degree, the smoothness and tesselation. Upper and lower bounds are given by different computations. The author does not claim that his algorithm is a practical one. Mainly it consists of computing the ranks of (in general huge) matrices. The strength lies in the fact that in some cases a part of the algorithm can be carried out analytically.
