An exact analytic solution is obtained for the problem of the stability of the axisymmetric thermocapillary motion due to a point heat source of constant power located on the horizontal free surface of a viscous fluid. An exact solution of the problem of the axisymmetric thermocapillary motion due to a spherical heat source is also presented and its stability is investigated. It is shown that it is always possible to select physical heater properties such that for arbitrarily small source power, the axisymmetric motion is unstable relative to the vortex motion. A comparison is made with experiment.
